Lyng Qualifying!

06 May 2012

Go Back The sleepy village of Lyng in Norfolk had the silence broken at precisely 9am with the MX2 Qualifying sessions which were dominated by the Buildbase MX2 Teamster, Nicholas Aubin. The top three in both the Q1 and Q2 sessions remained the same with local hero Elliot Banks Browne (HM Plant KTM UK) finishing second, almost one second behind the flying Frenchman, with Graeme Irwin (Samsung Yamaha) slotting into third, which was pleasing after his horrific crash at round two.

Last years polesitter, Bryan MacKenzie could only manage fourth this year, but this still gives a good gate choice for the races later this afternoon. The MXY2 Youth class are currently in their qualifying session, which we hope to report later. Mel Pocock (Monster Energy Bike It Yamaha) and Alan Keet (Dyer and Butler Suzuki) completed the top six with Neville Bradshaw (Evotech Stevens Honda) only improving from a Q1 ninth the seventh in Q2.

Despite struggling in the Q1 session in the ultra competitive MX1 class, HM Plant KTM UK rider, Kevin Strijbos lept to the top in the Q2 shootout with a time of two minutes and two seconds which only Stephen Sword (Tyco Suzuki by TAS) managed to equal to take second spot. Initial polesitters, Jason Dougan (Route 77 Energy MVR-D Honda) and Matiss Karro (STR KTM) finished third and fourth, just one second adrift with Shaun Simpson (Monster Energy Bike It Yamaha) whose chose to go last in Q2, and Martin Barr (Maxxis Henderson LPE Kawasaki) rounding out the top six.

In the full line up of MXY2 (Youth) riders, it was Brad Todd (Rev Racing Honda) who took pole position, just half a second over Dan Thornhill (Grittenham MX Meredith Suzuki) who goes into the event lying third in the series. Third position in the single qualifying session went to Sam Winterburn (Appleyard Yamaha) who was just 600th of a second of the pace. Championship leader, James Harrison (RFX Lanes Kawasaki) was down in a lowly 13th position, just over three seconds off the leader.

As the first MX2 race goes off the line light drizzle has closed in on the circuit which will make little difference to the circuit itself, which is in excellent condition.

We will give a further race report later on in the afternoon.
